Bryan Guevara - Current Undergraduate Research

Bryan Guevara (Junior - Biology) started as a Science Alliance Intern during the Fall of his sophomore year. He was accepted as an IBA-Scholar over the summer and fall, and he was one of the first students accepted into the new IBA-MARC Program. This semester, Bryan will be serving as a Peer Mentor for some of our newest students!

Sofia Gomez (Junior - Biology) joined the Science Alliance her freshman year. She has participated in the Peer Mentoring program, Science Alliance internship, and was accepted as an IBA Scholar for the Summer of 2021. This semester, Sofia will be mentoring a 1st or 2nd year student in the Peer Mentoring program.

Congrats to Josh Peterson (Current IBA-MARC Scholar) and Renato Jensen (IBA Alumni) for co-authoring two publications! Josh Peterson is a current IBA-MARC Scholar studying Biology and Biochemistry and RenatoJensen is a former IBA Scholar who graduated in May 2021 with a BS in Biochemistry. Renato entered the UI-Iowa MSTP Program this Summer!

Cristina Garcia Graduates December 2021

Cristina Garcia, IBA Scholar August 2020-December 2021 graduated with this Fall 2021 with a BS in Pre-Medicine. Some of Christina's accomplishments include University of Iowa President's List (Spring 2021, Fall 2021), Dean's List (Fall 2020 to Fall 2021, ICRU (Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates) Summer Fellowship 2020, Iowa Advantage Iowa Award, Advantage Iowa Grant, National Scholars Award, Minority American Science Award (UICA), and a Research Development Scholarship. She began working in the Green Lab in January 2020 and the Hansen Lab in March 2021.

Latham Program featured by Office of Community Engagement

Lori Adams, program director for the Latham Science Engagement Initiative, and Associate Director Brinda Shetty, work with students within the fellowship program to ‘engage our community in thinking about how science impacts their daily lives, informs policy, and can be used to address societal changes.’ Students accomplish this mission by engaging in projects that raise awareness about climate change, health inequalities or broadening public participation in the sciences.

IBA/LSAMP/SA Students Present Summer Research

Students participating the the IBA/LSAMP Summer Program had the opportunity to present their research at the Summer Undergraduate Poster Symposium. This event was sponsored by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. This year we had 18 students from IBA, LSAMP and Science Alliance presenting posters at this event. 2021 NIH Virtual Summer Enrichment Curriculum

To help you sharpen your science skills and develop both professionally and personally, we have worked with Institutes and Centers (ICs) and Training Offices across the NIH to develop a summer-long series of activities. These online offerings will focus on the exciting science we do at the NIH and on important career, professional development, and wellness topics for students at all educational levels.
