Fall Semester

Fellows will enroll in a 2 semester hour fall course called LATH:3000 - Science Communication Skill Building where they will: 1) hone skills in communicating research to peers across science disciplines and to non-scientist audiences and 2) create a strategic plans for a group and individual project to be implemented in the spring. The course will meet on Thursdays from 8:30-10:10 a.m.

Spring Semester

Students will enroll in a 2 semester hour spring course called LATH:3001 - Latham Fellows: Science Outreach Project, which will provide guidance to students as they implement projects proposed the previous fall and will feature guest speakers who are actively engaged in science communication and engagement on campus. The course will meet on Thursdays from 8:30-10:10 a.m.

Expectations for completion of Latham Fellowship in Science Communication and Engagement:

• Complete an individual and a group outreach/engagement project.
• Participate in Project Engage Showcase held at the end of spring semester.
• Earn a B or above in LATH:3000 and LATH:3001.
• Upon completion of the fellowship program requirements, Fellows will receive a $500 award.

Latham Fellows in Science Communication and Engagement will distinguish themselves from others doing undergraduate research by:

• Strengthening broader impact and intellectual merit statements through creation and implementation of their own broader impact activities, making students more competitive for national merit scholarships such as the NSF GRFP and Goldwater Scholarships.
• Experiencing the strength of interdisciplinary interactions through exposure to research in other disciplines and working collaboratively with students across majors in the sciences on group projects.
• Developing fluency in communicating science to diverse audiences in the community.
