During the 2024 fall semester, the UI Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (UI-LSAMP) Program was excited to welcome four new members: Kylee Harford (Environmental Sciences), Yamam Hussein (Neuroscience), Riley McCoy (Biomedical Sciences), and Mariam Nawar (Biomedical Engineering). These new students join our returning students Waad Abdella (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology), Sunny Fieser (Neuroscience), and Bhoomika Shettigar (Neuroscience).
The UI-LSAMP program, which is housed in the Iowa Sciences Academy, is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and named after the former U.S. Representative Louis Stokes, who was a pivotal figure in the U.S. Congress, championing civil rights, equality, and social and economic justice.
In addition to receiving a stipend to do paid research, UI-LSAMP participants enjoy many program benefits such as opportunities to enroll in ISA classes each semester and attend ISA’s professional development and social activities. UI-LSAMP students are also encouraged to attend the annual LSAMP Spring conference which will be from February 7 – 8, 2025 and hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. Students are encouraged to present either an oral or a poster presentation at the conference.
If you are an ISA student not in the UI-LAMSP program but still interested in presenting at this conference, please contact ui-isa@uiowa.edu. (Presenters are not strictly limited to LSAMP-funded students). The updated information for the 2025 conference is not yet published, but you can see the program from the 2024 conference here.
UI-LSAMP is a member of the Iowa Illinois Nebraska STEM Partnership for Innovation in Research and Education (IINSPIRE) Alliance that unites 16 two-year and four-year colleges and universities with the goal of broadening undergraduate participation in research and creating a supportive community for students majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and pre-health professions. The UI-LSAMP program especially encourages applications from students transferring from two-year and four-year colleges and universities.
