The University of Iowa was the host location for the 2023 IINSPIRE LSAMP Conference @ the Graduate Hotel in Iowa City. The conference was attended by students, faculty, and staff representing the 16 two-year and four-year colleges and universities in the Alliance. Over the course of the weekend, students were engaged in sessions of Demystifying the Graduate School Application Process by Jodi Graff; Rebuilding Connections in the Wake of COVID by Doug Mupasiri; LinkedIn and Online Networking for Undergraduates by Jahnavi Pandya; and Using Research Measures as Learning Tools: The Development and Use of Student Profiles by Halin Chung. Between sessions, Mary Darrow led a REU Workshop: Searching for Summer Opportunities and Theresa Ho led a graduate student panel discussion. Students also had the chance to participate in an alumni panel discussion on STEM Journeys from former IINSPIRE LSAMP students.
This year, the LSAMP Conference featured two keynote speakers. Queenster Nartey, Cofounder of the IINSPIRE LSAMP Alumni Committe and Clinical Research Coordinator for The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern, addressed students on "Taking the Scenic Route." Beronda Montgomery, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at Grinell College spoke on Lessons from Plants: Insights for Human Thriving.
Students had the opportunity to network with their peers as well as at the Student Opportunities Fair on Friday. Students gave both oral presentations and participated in a Research and Experimental Poster session. Awards were given to students chosen by a panel of judges--pictures below!
