Climate Change and Health (CCH) Research Internship Program

The objective of the CCH research internship program is to recruit and mentor a diverse group of undergraduate students interested researching biological mechanisms that link climate change and health and translating research knowledge toward improving health in Iowa and the nation. Eligible students must identify as a member of an underrepresented group*. Interns will have opportunities for one-to-one mentoring with professors in the following Departments:

  • Veena Prahlad, PhD (Associate Professor, Department of Biology, CLAS)
  • Donna Santillan, PhD (Research Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Carver College of Medicine)
  • Mark Santillan, MD, PhD (Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Carver College of Medicine)
  • Andrea Adamcakova-Dodd, PhD (Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, College of Public Health)
  • Anna Malkova, PhD (Professor, Department of Biology, CLAS)
  • Ashutosh Mangalam, PhD (Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, Carver College of Medicine)
  • Jacob Simmering, PhD (Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Carver College of Medicine)
  • Kai Wang, PhD (Professor, Department of Biostatistics, College of Public Health)
  • Tianbao Yang, PhD (Department of Computer Science, CLAS)

A $1,500 stipend will be provided each fall and spring semester while the Intern is conducting research. The expectation is that an intern will work 10-12 hours per week during each semester.

Those admitted to the CCH Research Internship program will receive the following benefits through partnership with the Iowa Sciences Academy (ISA):

  • Interns are invited (and encouraged) to participate in didactic coursework offered by the ISA in the Fall and Spring semesters at the University of Iowa.
    • Fall semester:

      • IBA:1041:0003 - IBA Student Development Seminar: Critical Analysis of Primary Literature
    • Spring semester:
      • IBA:1041:0002 - IBA Student Development Seminar: Career Exploration and Specification
      • IBA:1041:0003 - IBA Student Development Seminar: Applying to Graduate School
  • Access to a career counseling psychology student to confidentially discuss their aspirations and any issues/concerns related to the matriculation through the UI.
  • Access to ISA activities, conferences, events, and workshops designed to prepare students for graduate education and/or research career opportunities.
