Pathfinders/Science Ally

One facet of the Science Alliance is to develop a network of faculty, staff, graduate students, post-docs (Science Allies) and undergraduate students (Pathfinders). The Science Alliance will allow current UI students’ access to institutional agents who can offer support throughout their college career, create a peer group of like-minded students interested in STEM fields, and provide opportunities for learning more about STEM majors and research on campus.

Science Alliance Internship

The Science Alliance Internship Program supports first and second year students interested in exploring research on campus. The program aims to enrich the undergraduate experience for underrepresented or disadvantaged students through coursework, mentor matching, career guidance, and creating a cohort of students with similar interests in science and research.

 
Applications are now open for the Fall 2024 - Spring 2025 year! The deadline is April 15, 2024. There may be another chance to apply in January of 2025 to have a lab placement for the spring semester only.
Students, particularly first year students,  can always  improve their chances of being accepted for spring of 2025 by enrolling in the course ISA: 1040 Exploring Research, next offered in the fall 2024 semester.  This is a 1 s.h. course and will include in-class discussions and lectures as well as tours.

UI-LSAMP 

The UI-LSAMP Program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority (URM) STEM graduates in the Iowa Illinois Nebraska STEM Partnership for Innovation in Research and Education (IINSPIRE) alliance and to build a foundation for greater increases in future years. Due to students from populations historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines being a growing segment of the region’s population, there is statewide urgency to remove the barriers to progress in developing a diverse STEM workforce.

UI-MARC 

The UI-MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) is a NIH-funded program that supports the academic and personal success of junior and senior University of Iowa students committed to pursuing a PhD. The goal of the Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) research training program is to develop a diverse pool of undergraduates who complete their baccalaureate degree, and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (e.g., PhD).
