Science Alliance student Eddie Sandoval (Physics) presents at FURF

The Iowa Sciences Academy (ISA) is proud to welcome 20 students into the Science Alliance Internship Program for the 2024-2025 academic year. This program is designed for first- and second-year students who are committed to conducting paid undergraduate research, engaging in ISA events while enrolling in a relevant course each semester. This year’s cohort includes six returning interns and 14 new members, all of whom have already impressed ISA staff with their responsiveness, initiative, and engagement. The Science Alliance Interns this year include Kennady Bertelsen, Krishna Bharadwaj, Adriana Castellano, Adam Conrad, Damien Deanda, Emily Eckhardt, Evie Ellison, Stella Gerlock, Brandon Cabrera Godoy, Luke Hawkins, Beatriz La Rota, Andrea Medina, Alexi Michanicou, Keegan Nissen, Leah Pena, Ainsley Rothgeb, Eddie Sandoval, Drew Stanek, Isabelle Yoder and Christina Yu.

In addition to their research, most Science Alliance students are enrolled in the ISA course, Professionalism in the Scientific Community. This course aims to develop students' communication and leadership skills, professional conduct, and ethical standards. Topics covered include:

  • Science and ethics

  • Adjusting to a new lab environment

  • Challenges faced by first-generation students

  • Diversity in STEM

  • Workplace stress and imposter syndrome

  • Professional conduct in both physical and virtual spaces

The course features invited speakers and panels to discuss various academic and professional issues, culminating in practical exercises where students practice networking and presentation skills by discussing their research projects.

This spring, Science Alliance Interns will continue their hands-on research while also taking the Entering Research Course (ISA: 1041:0001). This course will further enhance their research skills and prepare them for future scientific endeavors.

The Science Alliance Internship Program is not just about research; it’s also about building a supportive community. Drew Stanek, a current intern, shares that the program has provided him with a community of passionate undergraduate students and supportive ISA staff. Interns like Brandon Cabrera Godoy, Christina Yu, and Keegan Nissen appreciate the networking opportunities and connections the ISA offers.

Second-year intern Luke Hawkins highlights how the ISA has helped him develop both academically and professionally. The program has not only facilitated his entry into a lab but also helped him make professional connections that will benefit his future career.

The Science Alliance Internship Program at the ISA is a comprehensive initiative that supports students in their academic and professional growth. By providing hands-on research opportunities, professional development courses, and a supportive community, the program is shaping the next generation of scientists and researchers.
